Learn to ask the right question

O&S Bau approached us with the need for a new website. When asking why the common answers came up: it is outdated, we want something edgier. We learned, however, that image (and websites) is not at all responsible for assignments in the construction market. In 95 % of the cases, the price is relevant for the decision. After further research, we found that the strengths of O&S Bau are its great employees and their perfectionism, a constantly growing need in this segment. We concluded that the most significant need is strengthening the employee’s brand, not overcoming technical difficulties with the current website.

Analize

The first step was an overall evaluation of the entire communication. We analyzed the content of communication, Corporate Identity, photographic language, the entire photo archive, moving images, website. Based on this 26-page document, we developed a long-term master plan.

Defining goal - Setting the scope

As in almost every topic, there were things to improve. We decided we will work in overseeable cycles and developed a 5 phase master plan, beginning with phase 1 right away.

Design - positioning, communication concept

Positioning O&S Bau and defining their core values was quite a tricky task. On the one hand, O&S Bau is smaller than the international construction companies, on the other hand, bigger than the local craftsmen. But actually, this in-between we realized as their strength, strong enough to implement complex and big projects, small enough to stay flexible. This flexibility is needed to master intricate constructions in the alps as a task force.

Design - consolidate and fresh-up CI

As many different people, and no one really was responsible for Brand Design there were inconsistencies throughout the communication. We consolidated the different versions, updated and developed the Corporate Identity. The results were published in a Brandbook and can be handed to any Designer working for the company in future, securing consistency.

Design – defining photographic and moving image identity, new assets, new website

Over the years, O&S Bau built an extensive archive mainly containing amateur images. We did a huge selection process and ended up with 500 images to keep out of the over 20k photos. On the other hand, we developed and established an Image Style and rulebook for future photographic work. It contains two parts: one self-abling workflow and rule book to document events and journalistic work in-house and another part for briefing future professional photographers. Most of O&S Bau Projects have not been documented professionally. To keep the budget low and quality as high as possible, we selected only the most critical projects and photographed them professionally.

Design - new website

Another centrepiece of the project was the new website. We aimed to develop a website focusing on future employees and communicate a straightforward company profile to clients. We developed a separate website for apprenticeships, explaining the career path in the construction business. To undermine the common assumption that starting to work in the construction business is a failure. To lower the inhibition threshold, we established an online application and an option to book trial days.

Social Media

We combined all the parts mentioned earlier in the social media templates and guidelines, including fresh social media platforms as Snapchat and TikTok.
